The Challenging but Rewarding Course

“Challenging” is a word often heard when one is asked to describe the Calatagan Golf course. The course is laid out on rolling terrain perfectly contoured for dramatic golf shots, and the fairways and greens are designed between and across the rolls and folds of the land creating a variety of challenges.

There are many bunkers and sloping greens planted in the 18 Tifton grass greens. The international championship course is dotted by sparkling lakes and an abundance of indigenous and exotic trees. The par-71, 6,799-yard course offers challenges for both local and foreign players alike.

“It is very difficult,” said Mr. Kim Jin-Goo, who visited the course for the second time during his nine-day stay in the Philippines.

“Nice and challenging,” was how Ms. Jang Seong-An described the course just before she let out one of her powerful swings.

Meanwhile, pro-golfer Mr. Kim Dae-Kwon said the course is “very good” and that he only practices outside of Korea at the Calatagan golf course. “I have practiced in many countries,” he said, but for the last three years he has decided to practice outside of Korea only at Calatagan.

Paul Echavez, on the other hand, finds Hole No. 17 particularly difficult. A member of the Philippine amateur team under the Philippine Amateur Golf Development Foundation (PAGDF) of Tommy Manotoc, Echavez says he enjoys training at the course because “all the holes are challenging and the terrain is tricky.”

Mark Fernando, however, finds the long par 3 of Hole No. 8 the most challenging. He says you have to study and learn the layout well.

Challenging as it may be, the course still offers respite for golfers at the practice green and drink holes near Holes No. 4 and 5. After all, the reward is always greater as the challenge becomes more difficult.
